are coordinating a Clean Slate Clinic in collaboration

with community partners as part of 

Project Homeless Connect in Richmond on June 15, 2011.

Partners include: Rubicon Programs, Bay Area Legal Aid, East Bay Community Law Center, Legal Services for Prisoners with Children, National Employment Law Project, Contra Costa Health Services Homeless Program, and the Office of the Public Defender. The following services will be available for participants:

• Assistance obtaining a copy of state criminal history records (RAP Sheet) from the California Department of Justice. Fees will be waived by the California DOJ and free livescans will be provided by UC Berkeley and the Richmond Police Department.

• Review of criminal history records and consultation on criminal record remedies by Rubicon Legal Services, Bay Area Legal Aid, and East Bay Community Law Center attorneys and volunteers; Including determining eligibility for: conviction dismissals, certificates of rehabilitation, reducing felonies to misdemeanors,and probation term reductions. Screening for services will be both on the day of the event and on Saturdays beginning in April 2011. Pre-Screened participants may be eligible for dismissals at the day of the June 15th event.

• Training on employment rights and what can be reported on a background check by the National Employment Law Project and partners.

• Follow-up legal representation may be available for individuals seeking conviction dismissals.

Pre-Screening Clinic?

During the Pre-Screening Clinics being held at Rubicon Legal Services in April you will have the opportunity to meet with an attorney or supervised law student for a brief free legal consultation to assist you in determining whether you are eligible for a criminal record remedy in Contra Costa County.  Participants that may have eligible past convictions in Contra Costa County will receive assistance in obtaining a free copy of their RAP Sheet.

Dismissal of a Conviction?

Under Penal Code 1203.4, you can petition to dismiss a criminal conviction so that when you apply for many jobs, you can legally say that you were NOT convicted of that crime (however, the record of the case still exists, therefore, it is still a decision whether to disclose the prior conviction or not.)
